December 1, 2017

Celebrating Advent At All Saints', from the Latin meaning “coming,” has traditionally been a time not only to celebrate His first coming, but to anticipate with hope and fulfillment, Jesus’ second coming. In stark contrast to the way our culture anticipates Christmas, with at times, anxiety, frenzy, and even hopelessness, celebrating Advent can be a way of simplicity, quiet, and prayerful expectation. It’s a reminder to us that even a good thing like celebrating Jesus’ coming, can become overrun by the things we add to it.  Advent is a call to repentance and return, placing our faith in the One who came for us.

This December at All Saints' Church, we will be offering ways to celebrate the season with worship, teaching, fellowship, and opportunities to thank the Lord for his bountiful gifts to us this year by blessing others.

First Friday

We begin tonight, with First Friday Worship, which starts at 7:30 p.m. in the ASC multipurpose room. This is an hour of song, prayer, and fellowship designed for all ages. Parents of young children, we have a "dance floor" reserved up front where they can wriggle, jump, and giggle to their hearts' content. Come, set the tone for the season by directing your praise and attention to the One who made it all possible. Eve: Lessons and Carols
Lessons and Carols is a worship service used throughout the history of the church that highlights the Scriptures and hymns that lead us to the Christ child. This year, because the Fourth Sunday of Advent is also Christmas Eve, we will have one worship service in the morning and three evening services (See times below). Our morning service at 10:30 a.m. that day will be Lessons and Carols. We’ll have numerous Scripture readings that will begin in the Old Testament, highlighting God’s promised Messiah. The hymns and songs of this portion of the service will be Advent-themed. And then as the service shifts to the New Testament lessons of Jesus’ birth, we’ll sing traditional Christmas Carols. Lessons and Carols will conclude with prayer, without a celebration of Eucharist.

Fullness: Hope, Peace, and Joy
Not only will we celebrate Advent in our Sunday worship, but also in a single Adult Discipleship Hour offering at 9:45 a.m. on Sundays, entitled “Fullness: Hope, Peace, and Joy.” Father Dan and Father Alex will be the teachers for this course, on Dec. 3, 10, and 17. Party for Jesus
On December 17th, the children will be attending a Birthday Party for Jesus, with games, crafts, and treats. Also, on Christmas Eve, during the 5p.m. Family Service, our children will play an integral role in the sermon . . . more on that later.

Greening of the Church
An All Saints' Church tradition, the annual Greening of the Church will take place December 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m. We'll need many hands to hang greens inside and outside, decorate the tree, polish the brass, and generally spruce the place up for the coming celebration. Once the work is complete, we will gather in the Atrium to sing Christmas carols, enjoy hot chocolate, coffee and dessert, concluding by 8:30 p.m. Please bring a dessert to share!

Youth Christmas Caroling
Elevate and Consumed groups will join forces for a night of Christmas caroling, meeting at the Ellison's house at 7 p.m. After caroling they will return to the Ellison home for dessert. Please bring a dessert to share. The evening will wrap up at 10 p.m.

Children's Christmas Choir
Children's Choir Rehearsals are starting this week. If your child is interested in singing at the 5 p.m. Family Service on Christmas Eve, then please come to our choir rehearsal this Sunday, December 3, immediately following the 11 a.m. service (approximately 12:45 to 2:00 pm). Rehearsals meet in the Choir Room and are open to all children ages 5-12 years. Lunch is provided. The Children's Choir will be rehearsing for the next three Sundays (December 3, 10, and the 17) and will be practicing carols. For information, please contact Denise Avery-Craft at or at (571) 643-8936.

Opportunities to Bless Others

Un-Trim-A-Tree Sunday is the last day for picking tags off the Un-Trim-A-Tree to help families unable to provide gifts for their children this year. In partnership with Volunteer Prince William, All Saints' Church is one of many who help provide gifts to more than 5,000 area children annually through this program. If you're interested in filling a child's wish this Christmas, please stop by the tree and Un-Trim it by removing a tag. Be sure to let the volunteers record your tag so none are lost in the holiday bustle. All gifts will be placed at the altar and blessed during the Sunday services December 10.

Thanksgivings and Memorials
During this season of preparation for the birth of our Savior, one way to give thanks for loved ones who are no longer with us is to write a few lines of remembrance to be included in a Thanksgivings and Memorials page of our Christmas bulletin. Many people also choose to make a special offering in their loved ones’ name toward the adornment of All Saints’ Church, which helps us purchase our Christmas tree, wreaths, poinsettias, greens, and extra candles. To make a dedication, either complete a form (found on the back table in the Atrium) and return it with your check to the church office, or go online to  Deadline for submissions is Sunday, December 17 to ensure there’s time to include them in the bulletin. Christmas Banquet

Sign-ups are underway to provide food for the December 13th Christmas Harvest Banquet sponsored by Streetlight Ministries to feed the area homeless. The menu should reflect holiday traditions as much as possible. Donations are to be dropped off between 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. at Pathway Vineyard Church, 1550 Prince William Parkway. Servers should arrive by 6:30 p.m., and please plan to stay to help with the cleanup.

If anyone wishes to provide food or beverages but cannot do so during the scheduled delivery times, our team will deliver the items for you and heat the food, if necessary.  Contact us to coordinate the delivery. Stephen Ministry Training
Stephen Ministers are the “after people” who come alongside people to care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support: after the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of someone’s
 life; after the

doctor says, “I’m sorry but there’s nothing more we can do”; after someone finds a pink slip with a final paycheck; after the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions someone’s held at bay come crashing in; after the baby arrives, demanding more of a new mother than she ever thought possible.

If you have gifts for caring, encouragement and listening please contact Julie Tilton, our Stephen Ministry Leader, for more information and an application. Julie can be reached at 703 402-4576 or Training begins January 8,  and will meet from 6:30-9 p.m.  every Monday for 20 sessions. Not sure you’re ready? Take the training anyway. You will learn invaluable skills in relationship building!

Holy Spirit Revival Meetings
The National Prayer Chapel and All Saints’ Church are partnering to host Holy Spirit revival meetings at 7:30 p.m. on Monday nights! Our first meeting will be December 4 in the main sanctuary. We need volunteers to join a prayer team to pray regularly for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the meetings. Please contact Alexandra at (703) 927-9805 or
