Heading into the Wilderness...?

http://www.allsaintswoodbridge.org/uploads/AlexTheBaptist.jpgLaunching the Leightons

The time is approaching to celebrate Fr. Alex Leighton's ministry at All Saints' Church, and give thanks for the gift and blessing he has been to us. We will be launching the Leightons into their new adventures in Bozeman, Montana with a church-wide celebration on June 3rd following the 11 a.m. service. This will be a potluck meal, where we are requesting everyone bring a side dish, salad, or dessert. The  event will spill out onto the back lawn, if the weather permits, and we will have opportunities to relax and pray and enjoy one last time of fellowship with the Leightons. The day will also include a time to “roast” Alex, as well as to present gifts from representative groups in the parish and share remembrances of His ministry. If you would like to write and perform a song, a poem or just recall a story, we will have a sign-up for the day so that we can arrange the order of presentations. Please note that such offerings should be short, appropriate, and clear.

Many people have asked if there is a way to give a gift to the Leightons  and certainly, you can bring a physical gift to them the day of the celebration. Also, if anyone would like to give a financial gift to the Leightons or for their church plant, there are two ways to do this: You can bring cash or a check written out to the Leightons, which will be collected and presented to them (these gifts cannot be counted as tax-exempt through All Saints'). Or, you can give a tax-exempt gift for the ongoing work of planting a church in Bozeman to the sending agency for this mission, "Greenhouse Movement." Their address is 169 North Cuyler Ave, Oak Park, Illinois 60302. Please note “Alex Leighton” in the memo on the check. If you would like to support Alex in an ongoing way through Greenhouse movement, please contact him and he will arrange to meet with you.

Please mark your calendars for June 3. We will laugh and cry and remember together as we celebrate the Leightons and send them off with thanksgiving and excitement for their future.

Men's Farewell Barbecue for Father Alex
The Men of All Saints’ will also be gathering to honor Father Alex with a barbecue and afternoon of fellowship on Saturday, May 26 from noon-2 p.m. on the back lawn of the church. The Men’s Leadership Team will provide the meats; please bring a side dish, desert or drinks to share.

Small Groups Fair Postponed
We have decided to put off Sunday's Small Groups fair in order to give people more time to spend with family on Mother's Day. We will announce the new date as soon as it's scheduled. In the meantime, a list of current and soon-to-start-up small groups will be included in Sunday's bulletin. If you don't see just the right type of fellowship gathering on a night that works best for you, perhaps it's because a small group belongs in your home. Contact the church and we'd be happy to get you started.

And the Summer Hours Are...?
Not going to change! Enjoy a summer of continued routine, as we change absolutely nothing. We will, however reinstitute the Lemonade on the Lawn tradition, which proved so popular last summer. LoL will be a time of fellowship held between services. We're inviting each small group to volunteer to host an LoL Sunday by bringing light snacks. More details to come.

Youth Mission Yard Sale: Sneak Preview Tonight!

There's still time to donate your good “junk” to support the Youth Mission Trip to Aliquippa, PA. Look around your homes for items in good condition but no longer of use to you, and consider donating them to help our youth raise funds. Note that we accept children’s clothing but NOT adult clothing. In addition, we cannot accept large appliances or non-flat-screen TVs. Bring donations to the church any before 9 tonight and drop them off in the Atrium. If arrangements need to be made for someone to pick up large or heavy items, please contact Mario at msandoval@allsaintswoodbridge.org.  The yard sale will be tomorrow, May 12 in the Atrium. Invite everyone to come and shop! Come to the tonight's Early Bird, treasure hunt special: we're open until 9 p.m.

We would like to honor your graduates, whether they've completed High School or College, attained a Master's, a Doctorate, or reached any other milestone this school year, please email their names to the communications director at  announcements@allsaintswoodbridge.org (along with the degree earned), and we'll include it in our Graduation bulletin. Please submit names by May 24 to be sure everyone is included.

ALSO, All Saints' Church will hold a Graduation Service for all our High School seniors, to launch them into the world with prayer and blessings. The service will be held Thursday, May 31, at 7 p.m. Please contact Mario (msandoval@allsaintswoodbridge.org) for more information.

Alpha! The Prequel
If just reading the word "Alpha!" set your heart racing, then you're one of the many who believe it's time to bring this life-changing, foundational course back to All Saints' Church. Consider that heart note a Holy Nudge. We're looking for people who have already attended Alpha and might be willing to help us design a course plan. We will meet Tuesday, May 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Administrative Conference Room to take stock of our resources (people and materiel) and assess what we thought worked and didn't in previous courses. Over the ensuing weeks, we will actually go through the updated, 2018 version of the course together as a pilot class, using the discussion time in each lesson to develop our presentation. Our goal is to offer the first Alpha course this fall. For more information, contact Jerry or Rosemarie Fitzsimmons.

If you are distressed by the news around the world and want to do something to help, please consider this prayer opportunity. We meet the second Tuesday of every month. The next meeting is Tuesday, June 12  at 7:30 p.m. in the All Saints’ Prayer Center.

"Connecting Women" will meet every third Saturday of the month upstairs in Wegman's from 1-2 p.m. (the next meeting is May 18). This is a casual social event. Just grab a coffee and connect and get your weekly shopping done at the same time.

SERVE

Streetlight May 30
All Saints' Church will be providing the meals for the homeless May 30 at the Pathway Vineyard Church, 1550 Prince William Parkway in Woodbridge VA. Streetlight Ministries provides area homeless with many vital services, and counts on the community of churches to prepare and serve hot meals throughout the year. Those who would like to volunteer can find more information and sign up at the Streetlight table in the atrium on Sundays, or email Owen Cheney at ocheney2@verizon.net.

CVBS Mission Mondays
On Mondays through June 4, all are invited to spend whatever time you can on Monday mornings helping to prepare for the Community VBS mission.  We will gather between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Administrative Conference Room and paint, cut, sort, count, and ready all things needed for the Lord’s big mission.  Join in when you can, as many hands make light work and there is a job for everyone!

Looking to "Plug in"? Extra Hands are Always Appreciated
Please consider giving an hour or so of your time weekly or monthly to All Saints' Church by serving in one of the many volunteer opportunities. There's a spot for you wherever you would feel most comfortable serving--in the kitchen, in the nursery, in the office, helping to set up the altar, helping during the service as a reader, usher, chalice bearer or working in the audio-visual booth. If you are being called to serve, please contact the office at 703-670-0093 or via email to office@allsaintswoodbridge.org. Training will be provided if needed on an individual basis.

Kairos Mission back from Richmond
All Saints’ Family, Thank you sooooo much for your prayers and the cookies. The Lord blessed the Kairos weekend abundantly beyond what we could ask or imagine. Although emotionally, physically, and spiritually exhausting, it was a glorious time of seeing the Holy Spirit bring amazing transformation and healing—and you were part of it. All 30 participants who started the program stayed to the end, which hasn't happened in many years. Following are a few of the comments from the participants.

--I came for cookies and I'm leaving with Jesus.
--I found myself. I'm able to be vulnerable.
--I'm getting peace and joy.
--I'm taking an open heart that was closed for a long time.
--All of us are friends now. I can't explain the bond we have. We're family.
--I cried more tears than I have my whole life.
--I cried because everyone was happy. You don't see that here...every fun song we sang, I cried.
--I can't stop smiling. It was the best time in my life.
--I did everything. I cried, laughed. It was wonderful. A weight's been lifted... I learned things about myself... I found that there's things I need to change... I'm gonna be better for my children.
--There's a light in a very dark place.

This weekend we will return to the facility for Part Two of the mission, which is an Instructional Reunion. We will meet with "graduates" of last weekend's program to teach them how to form small groups that share scripture and devotions so they can support, encourage, and pray for each other. Rejoice with us and please pray that all 30 women opt to attend the session, and that the Lord will grow and protect the good work that he began.

-- Anne, Carol, & Debbie.
