Understanding Your Bible the Way Jesus Understood His
presented by David Bjork in the Administrative Conference Room
Saint Luke tells us how on the road to Emmaus the resurrected Jesus “opened the Scriptures” to two troubled disciples, explaining to them from Moses and all the prophets those things pertaining to himself. Based on the belief that the Old Testament is to be read in the light of the Christ, and the New Testament is to be read in light of God’s revelation to Israel, this class will attempt to follow that example.
Beginning with how to read the Bible, we will examine more than 30 scriptural themes including: Chaos and Dragons, Blessing and Curses, Anointing, Eternal Life, Spiritual Beings, Son of Man, Exile, and the Image of God. Each week, there will be a short multimedia presentation followed by group discussion. Whether you are a new or a seasoned disciple, if you are seeking growth and encouragement, this class is for you. Come and see!
Discipling Our Children, Discipling Ourselves
facilitated by Deacon Julie Tilton (M.S. Family Development, Virginia Tech) in the Creation Room (Children’s Wing)
Discipleship is much more than teaching our children about the Bible. We want them to trust in Christ, recognize they have been fundamentally changed, and then seek to live their new identity with deep gratitude and joy. We can help ourselves and our children memorize scripture, the books of the Bible, and even understand the story of redemption, but, like trying to make banana bread by simply laying out all the ingredients, until we do something with these ingredients, we will not get banana bread nor a mature disciple who looks like Christ.
Please join Deacon Julie as we learn together how to disciple ourselves and our children to become living, walking images of Jesus Christ. Our textbook will be Family Discipleship That Works: Guiding your Children to Know, Love, and Act like Jesus by Brian Dembowczyk.
